The Children’s Theatre Presents -The Magic Kite #ElPapaloteMagico #CLT

It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Charlotte, NC and I awoke feeling refreshed and blessed in so many ways. Mami2Mommy was invited to see The Magic Kite – El Papalote Magico at the Children’s Theatre and so I took my daughter, my sister and nephew to see the show. When I first heard about this show I was excited to see it because it resonated with me on so many levels. This beautifully written story is about a boy named, Tito, whose father is unexpectedly deported to Mexico. With the use of puppets and live music this magical story is told with a performance that is seamless and connects with children and your heartstrings.

Over the years I have had several conversations with my children about my childhood and how very different it was from theirs. I grew up in a small Hudson River town in New York with my family. We by no means were rich but my parents worked hard and gave us everything we needed. We were a Latino family from Peru growing up in a town that never treated us differently. To this day we still have strong ties to our hometown and friendships that have lasted a lifetime.

As we drove to the Children’s Theatre my sister, Jennifer, and I began to talk with our children about the show we were about to see. My daughter and nephew began asking us questions about deportation and why would a family member be sent away for no reason. My sister and I looked at each other and there in that moment a dialogue began and we shared with them our family story.

Without his family, my Papi traveled to New York from Peru to give us a better life of opportunities. At that time it was my mama, my sister and I. My sister and I were very young and only one year apart in age. I can tell you with certainty that I have no memory of my Papi leaving us, but my mama shared stories of how much we missed him and how difficult it was for all of us. After about a year my mama, sister, and I headed to New York to join my Papi and to begin our lives together in a new country. There were many challenges for us when we arrived. We knew no one, we had no family there and a language barrier made it even more difficult.

Over time we assimilated, began attending public schools, made friends and learned to speak English. We were making a life for ourselves in our new home in America. My mama even had another a child, a baby girl. But then one day something changed – something was very different. My parents told us we had to pack up and go back to Peru and my sisters and I didn’t know why. After a few months of living in Peru, I worried whether we would ever return? Thankfully we were able to go back home. Yes, I say home because America was and is my home. Without getting into all the details of what happened during that time, the story of the Magic Kite brought forth memories of how I felt when I was young – confused, afraid and unsure of what was to be for our future. But over time I realized that we were going to be okay and that my family would stay together. The love and unity of family made me the strong person I am today. My parents taught me to work hard and believe in myself. Because of them I am an educator, a blogger, a mother, a wife – I am Peruana.

As I watched the show and got lost in all it’s beauty in the colors, music and language it made me teary eyed because it reminded me of what my own family went through. It also reminded me of the sacrifices my parents made by leaving everything and everyone that they knew and loved behind. My siblings and I didn’t get a chance to grow up with abuelitos (grandparents), primos y primas (cousins), tios y tias (uncles and aunts) but I wouldn’t change a thing in my life. Facing adversity made me a stronger person. This show demonstrated in a kid-friendly way that everything will be okay even when you are the most afraid. My favorite part of the show was when Tito chanted “Sube, Sube Magic Kite – Papalote to the Sky” and up, up, up, and away he flew on his magic kite that he and his father made together – priceless!

Thank you to the Children’s Theater of Charlotte, Jose Cruz Gonzalez – writer, Adam Burke – Director, Rosalia Torres-Weiner – artist, and all the performers for telling this story in a way that many families can connect with.

The Magic Kite – El Papalote Magico will be showing from April 22 – May 1. There are still tickets available here.

Pregnancy Cravings? DoorDash To The Rescue!

Being 30+ weeks pregnant can have its ups and downs. I went through the beginning of this pregnancy very, very sick and in fact, lost 20 pounds because of it. It felt like I would never find relief and I thought I would never be able to enjoy food again. But there were moments after that initial 4 months that I was finally able to love all that being pregnant brought with it, like feeling the baby move and yes, being able to eat.

And eat I did! I didn’t overdo it but when I wanted to snack on something, or on the rare occasion I am craved something special, I allowed myself to give in and relish those moments of pure food bliss!

It can be difficult though, to have cravings but not have your significant other there to make a run to your favorite restaurant or if you’re like me, driving may also be out of the question most of the time because of my belly always getting in the way or just being flat out exhausted. I mean look at this belly? It’s no wonder I can even stand up without tipping over!

I think that’s why I was totally excited when I was invited to a Lunch & Learning with some friends, sponsored by DoorDash – an on-demand delivery service that connects customers with local businesses and has just found its way to Charlotte!

With more than 250 restaurants in the Charlotte area now delivering directly to your door, including local favorites like Fūd at SaludReid’s Fine Foods, The Burger Co, Ho Ho Cherry House, Craft Tasting Room and Growler Shop, and Fresh To Order, it just takes an easy few minutes to order through the app.

The DoorDash app can be downloaded to your iPhone/Android device OR if you want to take a quick peak online but off your mobile device you can visit them by heading to

Just choose a restaurant, the food you want and then sit back, kick up your feet and get that belly ready for some yumminess –  their system will route the order to the merchant and then select the most efficient driver to get you the food as quickly as possible. Talk about a pregnant woman’s dreams!

Once I arrived to my Lunch & Learn in Charlotte I immediately signed up on my Android device and within a minute I was staring at all the amazing choices I could choose from…pure heaven! But if you’re anything like me it can be a little overwhelming with so many choices so I was able to narrow them down by how long it would take to deliver to our location because the little peanut in my belly was begging for some comida rápida – fast food.

I finally decided on 3 different locations…and that was me holding back! Just keep in mind that *if you do choose to order from different places their are separate delivery fees.* That made plenty of sense to me seeing as how they would need to go to the different locations to pickup my orders. I was okay with that but know in the future I might keep it to a minimum of one location to order from unless I felt like splurging again.

I tried two new places, Room 112 and Amélie’s French Bakery and a family favorite for dinner later on, Brixx Wood Fired Pizza.  I made sure to include my two cents in the Special Instructions section and was grateful that they had included that because it made the process that much easier and less likely for error.  And being pregnant I truly appreciated the simplicity of making sure that I was getting everything exactly the way I wanted it because I knew during this pregnancy my taste buds and tummy were super particular about things.

After debating back and forth about what I should get I placed my order and not much long after I began receiving texts updating me on my pickup of the food and the delivery process.  The text messaging was something I opted for in my settings and loved that feature! When I initially ordered from a different pizza location and they were not open I immediately heard back from the DoorDash team and was taken care of immediately.  They were really on top of things with their communication and customer service.

Finally my food arrived and everything was just as I had ordered it and within less time then the app had stated.  However, remember to still go by the time they list to be on the safe side. If it comes sooner just consider it a bonus!

Below is what I ordered with the exception of the pizzas which my family ate quicker than I could take a picture of it! Brixx’s delicious food will do that to us every time. And speaking of having the chance to order from a family favorite, I did notice the prices on the menu were the same as we are accustomed to paying for which I was thankful.  However, you may find that some places vary in their pricing but with all the choices you are given you can easily find something within your price range and will love it.
