Interview With Daisy Fuentes – Unforgettable You

Submitted by on 07/30/2010 – 3:32 amOne Comment

Unforgettable You

Growing up I don’t recall there being very many Latina role models. And then one day MTV introduced Daisy Fuentes as their first Latina VJ. She completely blew me away! Here was this stunning and intelligent Latina making a name for herself. I had truly believed all odds were against me but Daisy’s success was proof to me that it could be done. However, as a teenager I still didn’t quite know what that meant so I just pushed it to the back of my mind and went on with life.

Flash forward twenty plus years.

I am now a wife, mami, and entrepreneur and still wondering if, as a Latina, I can truly be successful. So just when I started doubting myself again I received an email to review a book, Unforgettable You: Master the Elements of Style, Spirituality, and True Beauty by Daisy Fuentes.

In all honesty, I wasn’t certain if I would have time to read the book but once I started it I couldn’t put it down. Her straightforward advice and suggestions made me once again realize why she was so…well…unforgettable! And did I mention she just cracked me the heck up? Well she did just that with little tidbits like this in her Just Like a Woman chapter:

Lessons I learned when I was four…that I still live by at forty

Keep your mouth shut when someone else is speaking.
Don’t run with sharp objects.
Don’t be a tattle-tale.
Don’t lift your dress above your head.

Besides who can resist someone that quotes Bon Jovi in their book? Now that’s true New Jersey love right there!

And I really appreciated the timing of this book review and the fact that I was able to have Daisy personally answer a few of my questions. This is what she had to say about her book, Latina role models, moms, and social media. Enjoy!

M2M - What inspired you to write this book?

Daisy - What inspired me to write this book is my love for, and fascination with beauty.. And, what makes one person more attractive than another. I feel we all have more in common with each other than we think, especially our insecurities. True beauty is made up of many components, if you lack in any one area it will be more difficult for you to truly shine. Unforgettable beauty is something I feel we all strive for. Fortunately we can all become a better version of ourselves, but we must never stop learning. This is the book I’ve been looking for since I was 25.

M2M - Growing up I watched you all the time as an MTV VJ and you were a role model for me and many other Latinas. Did you have any Latina role models when you were growing up?

Daisy - Thanks for the role model comment… I’m flattered. When I was growing up there were not any “famous” Latinas on TV. My role models were my mom, and my grandmothers…. they were real examples of beautiful, strong, loving women. I was however inspired by many beautiful famous women, and continue to be. I feel we can all borrow, learn, and be inspired by each other. We have a lot more in common with each other than we think. I never understood women being “catty” with each other, we need each other.

M2M - What are some suggestions you would give to moms that are trying to “do it all” and yet find balance in their lives between family, work, and a social life?

Daisy - My advice to women who are trying to do it all…. take it easy, and don’t be so hard on yourself. You have nothing to prove to anyone. No ONE person can do it all. If you can get some help do it. If not, prioritize. Do what’s important to you, and what makes you and your family happy. Everything else will fall into place. And who says you HAVE to do it all? It’s ok if you only do some of it, but do it really well and with a smile.

M2M - How has your experience with social media been with regard to communicating with your fans and the launch of your book?

Daisy - Social media is an amazing tool when you want to reach out to the world. I enjoy hearing what my customers and fans have to say about my products or projects. It really does help me give them more of what they like. I don’t enjoy so much when strangers feel they have to comment on my personal life or on gossip they’ve heard about me, in fact if I’m honest… that part is quite rude.

A big abrazo-hug and thank you to Daisy for once again showing this Latina that it’s never too late to be “unforgettable”. Keep making it happen Daisy so that we can continue to inspire other Latinas! So go ahead and check out her book and come back and tell me what you all thought. Would love to hear your comments!

With all my mamí love,

Jennifer
